Body Hair Transplant

Body hair transplant is an extensive solution for individuals seeking donor hair on their scalp and restoring affected areas affected by hair loss. This procedure requires extracting hair follicles from different parts of the body, such as the chest, back, arms, or beard, and transplanting them to the scalp or other desired areas. It is a creative option for those who want fuller coverage when traditional methods are limited.

What is Body Hair Transplant?

A body hair transplant is performed using hair grafts from other parts of the body, such as the beard, shoulder, arms, chest, legs, stomach, etc.

Saraswat Hospital is a leading clinic for body hair transplant in India. This kind of procedure is an advanced form of a typical FUE hair transplant method. Hair follicles are directly extracted from the selected donor region of the body using a low-torque, low-RPM FUE machine. The follicular grafts collected are then implanted onto the recipient area of the scalp to complete the transplantation procedure.

It is an ideal way to treat patients with complete baldness or those who have insufficient donor hair on their scalp. Body hair transplants give natural-looking results.

Indications of Undergoing a Body Hair Transplant

An all-around physical examination is conducted to determine if a patient is suitable for a body hair transplant. Using advanced software-based technology, some analysis is done to evaluate the hair and scalp health, and can also estimate the number of follicles required to achieve the desired hair density. This analysis helps doctors decide whether a patient needs to undergo a body hair transplant.

Some common indications are:

Will Body Hair Transplant Work for You?

Hair loss problem can be caused by a number of factors, and a Body Hair Transplant (BHT) could be an appropriate option for you in case you are having permanent hair loss and fulfill the medical criteria for a BHT after a medical assessment. A body hair transplant is considered to be most beneficial for those patients who experience stable hair loss and have a healthy donor area from the body regions, such as the beard or chest. In case your hair loss is caused by any of the following factors, BHT could be a good option for you:

Benefits of a Body Hair Transplant

Ideal Candidate for Procedure

Body hair transplant is a specialised technique of hair transplant. To decide if a patient is eligible or not, the doctors rely upon a special kind of method. This is known as the TDI (Torso Donor Index), which is a culmination of five criteria that include:

For a patient to be eligible for a body hair transplant, the TDI results must measure between 5 to 8 or more. If the results are below 4, then the patient is not an ideal candidate for the procedure.

Difference Between Scalp Hair and Body Hair

One of the most essential things that patients need to understand is that body hair differs from scalp hair in many ways. Scalp hair has a longer growth cycle and grows for several years, which makes it the best for density. Body hair, on the other hand, has a shorter growth cycle and is shorter in length. The main points of difference are:

Body Hair Transplant Procedure

A body hair transplant is typically performed through an advanced Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique. To prepare for the surgery, patients have to shave their donor area 2-7 days before the procedure. This is to ensure that only the strongest hair is used and only those in their active growth (Anagen) phase are extracted.

A hair transplant procedure generally involves local anesthesia for the comfort of the patient. The procedure is usually carried out in 2 separate time blocks – the extraction of grafts and the placement of grafts.

To extract the follicular grafts from the donor area, straight and small punch excisions are made with a low-RPM, low-torque device of 0.9mm to 1mm in size. The wounds in the area typically heal within 4 to 5 days and don’t leave any visible linear scars in their place.

The harvested grafts may need extra refinement in the process of removing excess skin or fat from their roots before being transplanted to the recipient area. Once done, these grafts are then implanted in the recipient’s treatment site on the scalp.

Parts of the Body Used as Donor Areas

Various body parts can be utilized as a donor site based on the quality of hair and the body of the patient.

Body Hair Transplant Helps in Scar Repair

If you have gone through a major accident that caused scarring or had a previously botched-up hair transplant treatment rendering you without any donor hair, then a body hair transplant offers you great relief for your condition.

The body hair transplant is offered for corrective surgery on slot formations, strip scars, unsightly punch grafting marks, or hairline scars from a flap procedure.

Cost Of Body Hair Transplant

A body hair transplant procedure is much more complicated than a typical FUE or FUT hair transplant. The harvesting of hair grafts extracted from the body takes up much more time. The entire procedure needs a highly skilled surgeon along with some specialist equipment.

All these factors combined mean that the cost of a body hair transplant is higher in comparison to a normal hair transplant. The final cost of the procedure depends on the number of hair follicles extracted and implanted during the procedure. Other influential factors include the qualification and experience of your surgeon and the reputation of the hair transplant clinic.

At Saraswat Hospital in Agra, we provide body hair transplants at affordable prices.

Limitations of Body Hair Transplant

Although Body Hair Transplant (BHT) is an efficient and highly advanced technique for selected patients, it also has some practical limitations that need to be understood properly before undergoing the surgery.

The first important drawback of BHT is that body hair does not have the same length as scalp hair. Since the body hair has a shorter growth cycle, the final result after the procedure may not be as satisfying as you want it to be. Another major point to be considered is the variation in texture. Body hair, particularly from the beard or chest region, may be thicker, coarser, or curly compared to scalp hair.

The rate of growth of body hair is also less predictable. Since scalp hair grows in a predictable manner, with a fixed growth cycle, body hair can grow at a slower rate or even enter the shedding phase earlier, which makes the final result slightly variable from patient to patient. Body hair transplant also needs a highly qualified and skilled surgeon. The procedure is complex, and if it is not done correctly, the survival rate of the grafts can be impacted.

Moreover, the process is more time-consuming. The extraction of body grafts takes longer, and the healing of multiple sites of the donors may also demand additional care. It is also necessary to note that the results may vary greatly from person to person. Variables such as the quality of hair, skin type, healing indices, and health conditions contribute largely to the final outcome.

Finally, Body Hair Transplant is not indicated for creating fine regions like the hairline and temples, where the natural softness and direction are of prime importance. Due to the above-mentioned limitations, BHT is considered a secondary procedure and not a full replacement for traditional scalp hair transplantation procedures.

Post-operative Care & Results

The post-operative care instructions for the recipient area on the scalp remain the same as in a normal hair transplant. some things to keep in mind:

  • Keep your head in an elevated position for the first 2 days.
  • Lay down flat while sleeping. Do not lay on your side or on your stomach.
  • Avoid head showers for the first 48 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous activities like exercise or jogging.
  • Avoid high temperatures and sweating. So, no sauna or spa for 7 days.
  • Avoid direct exposure to the sun in the first week.
  • No swimming for 2 weeks.
  • Do not wear a hat or tight clothes that have to be worn on the head.

Care instructions for the donor area: Apply a dressing with antibiotic cream on the donor area of the body. The wound should be covered for the first 7 days. Once the area heals, no bandaging is required after a week.

The results of a body hair transplant take longer to be seen than a normal hair transplant. The regrowth of the transplanted hair follicles starts 3-4 months after the procedure. The full results are only visible 12-18 months after the procedure.
